For those of you still unsure about the difference between the two disciplines, I'll try and explain:

Copywriting is concerned with persuading and eliciting an emotional response that makes people buy. The best copywriting uses language that is suitable to the target audience, captures the attention and makes the reader want to read more. It always highlights the benefits of a product or service and encourages the reader to buy or contact the business for more information. The emphasis is always on selling the benefits of a product or service.

Technical writing is slightly different in that it focuses on presenting information in a format that is easy to understand. And It doesn't have to be technical - anything from educational leaflets to simple instructions can be classed as technical writing. The important thing with technical writing is that it is clear, concise and is unambiguous - if people can misinterpret it, it is failing. Of course, copywriting plays a part in technical writing too - when a reader is using a manual or on-line help, they need to be reassured that they have made the right investment. Instructions and tutorials are also a great place to promote features and benefits that might not have been the focus of a sales campaign.
